Drs. Gibbs and Marchi discuss radiation concerns for children

Monday, November 29th, 2010

As many of our patients are aware, the New York times recently published an interesting article that discusses radiation concerns for children in dental offices. Since many of you have called to ask a few questions, we decided to explain our practices, position and insight into this topic.

First and foremost, we would like to say that we do not have a cone-beam CT scanner in our office. We currently use a digital x-ray machine that provides 2-D images. Our standard procedure for diagnostic records includes two digital x-rays only (a panoramic x-ray and a lateral cephalogram), both of which are part of the standard of care for diagnostics in orthodontic cases. Without these two images, we are unable to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan for our patients.

Our office is in complete compliance with all radiation monitoring standards and we continuosly strive to update our knowledge base regarding the best protocols for our patients and staff.

We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions concerning this topic. Thank you!

Giving thanks

With Thanksgiving here, it’s a great time to ask ourselves what we’re thankful for. With our friends and family around us, we celebrate the blessings given to us in the past year. What are you thankful for this holiday season?

Our entire team at Gibbs Orthodontic Associates would like to wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving. It’s a big food holiday, so be careful what you eat with those braces! If you have any stories or photos to share with us, we’d encourage you to send them along or post them on our Facebook page!

Ask Drs. Gibbs and Marchi: Why are straight teeth so important, anyway?

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Some people wonder why Drs. Eric P. Gibbs and Fernanda Marchi and our team at Gibbs Orthodontic Associates work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation. Drs. Gibbs and Marchi can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment in our convenient Manhattan office.
